There was a time in my life when I did not understand why I felt so divided inside.
One part of me wanted to keep going, keep doing, keep holding everything together. It wanted structure, answers, movement, and control. Another part of me felt deeply, longed to rest, wanted to trust life more, and needed space to simply be. For a long time, these two parts felt like they were pulling me in opposite directions.
I now understand that what I was experiencing was not confusion. It was an imbalance.
Balancing your inner masculine and feminine energies is not just a spiritual phrase. It is something many of us quietly live through, even if we do not have words for it at first. Every human being carries both energies. The struggle begins when we start living almost entirely from one side and disconnect from the other.
In my own healing journey, I have seen how easy it is to lean too far into one energy. There were phases when I became all action and endurance. I kept moving, kept surviving, kept trying to be strong. Then there were phases when I dropped into deep feeling, reflection, intuition, and inner searching, but found it harder to move things forward in the outer world. Neither side was wrong. I just was not meant to live from one side alone.

What masculine and feminine energies really are
Before anything else, I want to say this clearly. Masculine and feminine energies are not about gender. They are not about being a man or a woman. They are inner qualities that live in all of us.
The masculine energy is the part of you that brings direction. It helps you take action, make decisions, create structure, protect your boundaries, and move with purpose. The feminine energy is the part of you that receives, feels, intuits, creates, softens, and flows. It allows you to pause, sense, trust, nurture, and connect.
We need both.
The masculine helps us build. The feminine helps us feel what is worth building.
The masculine creates a container. The feminine fills that container with life.
Neither energy is better than the other. Neither is more spiritual. A healthy inner life asks for both. The pain begins when one side has been rejected, shamed, or left underdeveloped.
How an imbalance can look in real life
When masculine energy becomes dominant
Sometimes masculine energy becomes dominant. This can look like always doing, always planning, and always carrying everything. From the outside, it may even look like strength. Inside, though, there is often exhaustion. Rest feels uncomfortable. Receiving feels unfamiliar. Emotions begin to feel like an interruption.
I know this energy well. There were times in my life when I became used to carrying pain silently and simply moving through it. After loss, emotional upheaval, health challenges, and major life shifts, a part of me learned to stay functional even when I was not fully okay. It looked like strength, but often it was survival.
When you are leaning too heavily into the masculine, rest can start to feel uncomfortable or even undeserved. Asking for help may feel harder than carrying everything alone. Busyness can become a way of avoiding what is happening underneath, and performing strength may feel safer than softening into vulnerability. On the surface, life may still look productive, but inside, joy can begin to fade.
If any of this feels familiar, you may also want to explore the signs of rising masculine energy and what it means when that energy awakens within you.
When feminine energy becomes dominant
At other times, feminine energy can become dominant in a very different way. You may feel everything deeply and still struggle to move forward. So much gets sensed, absorbed, and processed that even simple decisions begin to feel heavy. There may be beautiful ideas, deep reflection, and emotional awareness, yet very little structure to help those things take shape in daily life.
I have known this side too. My spiritual awakening opened me to a much deeper emotional and intuitive world. I started sensing more, feeling more, and questioning more. It was sacred, but it could also feel overwhelming. At times, I had insight without direction, deep inner truth without a clear way to ground it in the outer world.
When feminine energy becomes overactive, it can leave you rich in feeling but uncertain in action. Readiness may start to feel like something you must wait for before you begin. Other people’s emotions can easily become entangled with your own. Giving may come naturally, while asking for what you need feels harder. As a result, beautiful ideas often remain within you instead of becoming something lived.
One of the signs I often see in this state is that absorbing other people’s emotions becomes more intense. Other people’s feelings can easily become entangled with your own when your inner boundaries are soft.
The deeper reason this happens
Most people are not imbalanced because of their personality. They are imbalanced because of what they learned was safe.
So much of our inner life is shaped in childhood. If softness was not safe, we may become overly guarded, productive, and emotionally distant. If taking action or having needs was not safe, we may become passive, over-accommodating, or afraid to move forward.
We adapt to survive.
Later in life, those adaptations begin to feel like identity. But often they are old protection patterns.
In my own life, healing has shown me that many inner conflicts are not random. They are connected to wounds, conditioning, grief, and the ways we had to protect ourselves. When you begin to understand that, you stop judging yourself so harshly. You start listening differently.
When the feminine has been wounded, it can become hard to rest, receive, trust, or soften. This can happen when emotional expression was dismissed, when sensitivity was treated like weakness, or when you learned that your value came from how much you could do or give. In that case, you may become highly capable but deeply disconnected from your own tenderness.
When the masculine has been wounded, you may struggle with direction, healthy boundaries, self-trust, or decisive action. This can happen when authority feels unsafe, when taking up space invites criticism, or when having your own will is discouraged. In that case, you may stay in uncertainty, self-doubt, or over-receptivity because movement itself does not feel safe.
The yogic lens: Ida, Pingala, and inner balance
I also love how Indian spiritual wisdom speaks about this.
In yogic understanding, there are two important energy channels in the subtle body: Ida and Pingala. Ida is the lunar current. It is cooling, receptive, inward, intuitive, and connected with the feminine principle. Pingala is the solar current. It is active, warming, outward-moving, focused, and connected with the masculine principle.
When these currents are in harmony, energy moves more naturally through the central channel, and there is a sense of clarity, steadiness, and alignment. When one dominates too much, life can start to feel tilted. We may become too rigid, too restless, too passive, too flooded, or too disconnected.
The image of Ardhanarishvara, half Shiva and half Parvati, expresses this beautifully. It reminds us that wholeness is not about choosing one energy over the other. It is about remembering that both already exist within us.
What balancing these energies actually looks like
Balancing these energies is not about becoming perfect, and it is not about forcing yourself into some fixed balance of softness and strength. It is more real and more human than that.
It asks for awareness. The kind that helps you notice when you are always doing, always moving, always managing, and gently question what feelings may be sitting underneath all that action. It also asks you to notice when you are living so much in feeling, reflection, or inner processing that you begin to avoid the action your life is asking from you.
This balance is learned in small moments. In knowing when to hold and when to surrender. In understanding when movement is needed and when pause is wiser. In recognising when a boundary is necessary and when the heart is ready to open. In some seasons, it means leading yourself clearly. In others, it means listening more deeply to what is true within you.
How I balance my own energy
For me, this balance has not come all at once. It has come in layers through healing, heartbreak, spiritual awakening, and honest self-observation. I have learned that one of the simplest ways I can support this balance is through the rhythm of my everyday life. During the day, I usually hold space for more masculine energy. That is when I do work that needs focus, structure, decisions, and movement. By evening, I consciously soften. My evenings are slower, calmer, and more creative. I like dim lights, soft music, comforting food, mandala creation, and quiet moments that help me come back to myself. Nature walks also help me reconnect and regulate my energy in a very gentle way. These small rituals may look simple from the outside, but for me, they are part of how I stay connected to both my inner masculine and feminine. Even now, I would not say I have mastered this balance. I would say I am in relationship with it, and that feels more honest.
Gentle ways to begin rebalancing
If you notice that you are living too much in the masculine, the invitation is not to stop being strong. It is to let softness return. That may look like giving yourself small moments of stillness without filling them immediately. It may mean resting without guilt, asking for help in one small way, or noticing your emotions without trying to fix them right away. It may also mean choosing movement that feels nourishing instead of performative.
If you notice that you are living too much in the feminine, the invitation is not to become harder. It is to let the structure support your sensitivity. That may look like setting one clear intention for the day, acting before you feel completely certain, finishing one small task, naming a need directly, or creating a simple routine that supports you.
These are small steps, but small steps matter. Healing often becomes real in ordinary moments.
A question to sit with
Ask yourself this gently:
Which part of me has been carrying most of my life, and which part of me has been waiting to come home?
That question alone can open a lot.
Journal prompts
If you want to go deeper, sit with these slowly.
Which energy feels safer to you, doing or receiving?
What did your childhood teach you about softness, power, emotion, and action?
Do you feel more comfortable expressing strength or vulnerability?
Where in your life are you over-functioning?
Where are you waiting instead of choosing?
What would it look like if both energies supported each other inside you?
You can also try writing a letter from your inner masculine to your inner feminine, or the other way around, and simply see what comes through.

The inner marriage
There is a beautiful phrase for this work: the inner marriage.
To me, this means the moment when the parts of you that once felt separate begin to understand each other. Not perfectly. Not all at once. But honestly.
The strong part learns that it does not always have to hold everything alone. The soft part learns it can trust itself to move. The intuitive part learns that structure can support it. The action-driven part learns that feeling is not weakness.
This is sacred work. Quiet work. Lifelong work.
And maybe that is the real balance, not becoming some ideal version of yourself, but becoming whole enough that you no longer have to abandon one part of yourself to survive.
With love,
Ankita
